Completed Yr 12 in 1985 Kelmscott Senior High School. Highest mark in Early Childhood Studies, 2nd highest mark in Art, these were obviously my two favourite subjects at school!
I had no idea what career I could undertake in the way of Art, so I sat the exam for CCC Certificate in Childcare with a girlfriend. She happened to pass and get through and I didnt.
So I decided to look for work. I found it or it found me, and I didnt need to go too far, local printers ‘Kelmscott Print’ (lights in Albany Highway Kelmscott) were advertising.
1986 -1989 (3 years)
It was a small business with only a husband and wife running it. No computers, old stick and paste - scalpel job. Very hand-ons; printing, plate making, dealing customers, accounts, tea and coffees, artwork, filing, answering the phone, deliveries etc. I was trained in typesetting, paste-up, graphic design and camera work. I had a flair for my work, I worked very well under pressure, extremely neat person in my work habits, I worked well without supervision, I was considered a responsible and a conscientious employee.
I completed several part-time certificates in Desktop Publishing, Intro to Computer Graphics, Mac-Designers Course and Adobe Photoshop.
My introduction to a mac computer was firstly with Dale Print-Armadale then I worked in the production room alongside ticketwriters doing the old stick and paste again with FAL-Kewdale before they were forced to eventually go to computers too.
1990-1996 (6 years)
I worked for Crystal Printing as a Mac Operator; competent in programs such as QuarkXpress, Pagemaker, Freehand and Photoshop. I was promoted to an Artroom Supervisor in 1994.
10 June 1995, 1st child Aaron was born
Left full-time work and sub-contracted (collected and brought work home to complete) from Crystal Printing (later to be Worldwide Printing-Cannington), Artech Printing. Worldwide Printing-Maddington and Snap Printing-Maddington. Aaron was the best child ever, he just sat there and played all day long while mum worked on the computer. Competent in programs such as Indesign, MYOB, Illustrator, Microsoft Excel, Word and Powerpoint.
25 August 1997, 2nd child Travis was born
Still sub-contracted but it didnt work with Travis, he demanded much more attention. Money was tight so I went back to work full-time 2nd child at only 6 months old I had no choice but to put him into daycare. Full-time work at Worldwide Printing-Belmont, plus continued with sub-contracting.
1998-2008 The Weekend Examiner (10 years)
Sub-contracted from 5 days a week - down to 1 day a week because I was just too busy with my own clientele and new business;
July 2005-2011 The Valley Reporter (7 years)
Editor/Publisher, Advertising, Sales, Photographer, Accounts - everything! I employ a Journalist, a Sub-Contractor and 14 local people to do my delivery rounds.
1987-2011 FN Grafix (24 years)
